I wasn't even trying to use auto-activation (which would be nice). I just wanted to activate a font or two and use them.
Quark 6.1 (OS X 10.4. doesn't seem to even see any of the fonts (I tried type one and opentype) I manually activate. They are available to InDesign, TextEdit. Just about any software except Quark.
I've tried restarting, cleaning caches although the options I have are only with quark 6.5.
Help please.

To make it more confusing the fonts are recognized if I use Font Reserve--a problem I thought was the best until extensis decided to buy them out and destroy it.

I totally empathise. Font Reserve was a GREAT program. Several years ago, I met the developer at a trade show and told him how he had made work/life so much easier. But not long after Extensis bought the company and it became very twitchy. I tried Suitcase Fusion and did not like it at all.
FontExplorer seems like the best solution, although it doesn't perform well with Quark 6.5. I was going to upgrade to 7 when I read that there are problems with that as well. After being a faithful Quark user since 1991, it's time to switch over to InDesign CS2. |

Yeah the wierd thing with Quark 6.5 is that with FEX the auto activation works great for me BUT when I try to manually activate a font, nothing shows up in the quark font menus (no matter what kind of font it is be it truetype, opentype, or postcript). Logic would tell you an application should have more trouble with auto activated fonts, not manually activated ones…
FEX solution is to upgrade to quark 7.0, but since I am in a corporate environment, this is not so easy. (request for upgrade can take a loooooong time). I don't think the FEX developers will be releasing a patch or even addressing interaction with quark 6.5 |

There was a posting on one of the boards about problems with Quark 7. If it worked I'd order it today, since I have a small design firm.
The whole font management issue is very frustrating. FEX seems to be working fairly well but I am having some issues today with duplicate fonts opening in Illustrator CS2. It's wonderful that Linotype is giving it away but I'd be more than happy to pay for a program that was bulletproof like the old Font Reserve. |

Here is a method which will allow manually activated fonts to show in Quark 6.5 (haven't tried 6.1, but it might work). It's not an optimal solution, but in my tests, it does work.
1. Open FontExplorer X
2. From the Menu Bar, choose <strong>FontExplorer X</strong> > <strong>Preferences</strong>
3. Click on the <strong>Advanced</strong> icon
4. Uncheck "<em>Deactivate all fonts which have been activated during the active session on quit</em>"
5. Activate all desired fonts
6. Quit FontExplorer
7. Open FontExplorer X
8. Open Quark
After following these steps, the temperamental fonts should appear in the Quark font menu.
I got this idea from the comment thread at http://www.jasonsantamaria.com/archive/2005/09/13/fontexplorer_x.php |

Had a few Quacky problems today, followed your routine, and it worked. Also, noticed I had to open up all sub-folders of imported fonts and make sure I wasn't trying to double activate same-name fonts which the customer had - into the fonts folder. Once I did this (a bit tedious), they all showed up OK. FEX is fussy this way; maybe that's not a bad thing. This way I know exactly what I've activated for the job; also not a bad thing. It'll be interesting to see How FEX evolves. It's a case of getting used to it, to some extent. |

| FEX is working with Quark 6.5, at the moment. But I decided to migrate to InDesign CS2. I upgraded to the Adobe CS2 Suite last time around and hadn't explored the program. Much to my surprise, I really like InDesign. It's not perfect but what program is? Well, Font Reserve used to be but Extensis took care of that. |

Yeah, we've been suggesting in our labs that users work with InDesign instead of Quark 6.5 to avoid these font problems. InDesign seems to work much better with FEX than Quark.
I've played a little bit with Quark 7 and FEX, and this type of thing doesn't seem to happen in it. Although, I haven't used it enough to be sure. |

Absolutely! InDesign CS2 works much better with FEX than Quark 6.5. I've sent several jobs to press in the last couple of weeks and so far no glitches.
The kerning/tracking is a bit annoying in InDesign. Either it moves in 5 point increments or you have to type in the number you want. It may just be that I haven't figured out how to do it in single points.
FYI: Word is that Adobe is supposed to be updating the whole suite in the next couple of months. |
