I've just upgraded my Mac OSX Leopard installation to version 10.5.2, and Linotype Font Explorer seems to make other applications hang. When I force quit Font Explorer, then the other apps begin responding once more. I found nothing on this in the forums or FAQs, but it is the first day of the update, so I'm not surprised.
In my system.log the following error appears:
Feb 11 18:14:05 jonathanwinns-power-mac-g5 Linotype FontExplorer X[303]: *** CFMessagePort: bootstrap_register(): failed 1103 (0x44f) 'Service name already exists', port = 0x8207, name = 'ATS Query Port'\nSee /usr/-/servers/bootstrap_defs.h for the error codes.
I don't have the faintest clue what that means. Please let me know if you have any solution ideas, or if I can provide more data.
Thanks. |

| I see the same problem. No fix to offer, just solidarity. |

It seems that FontExplorer will work if you start up your programs before running the app. I got InDesign CS3 to work this way. FE will even activate fonts after you do this.
Still, it is a serious problem and - to be addressed soon. |

| Thanks for your replies. On the advice of an IT friend, I repaired disk permissions on my home volume, and saw that there were quite a few to be made after my 10.5.2 upgrade. Unfortunately, this did not help the problem, so there's one idea to deduct. |

Signed up just to add my voice to the list.
Big thread on apple.com about it - seems FontExplorer is a "Very Bad Thing" when combined with 10.5.2
Life is going to seriously - til this is fixed. |

The World is not at an end.
Disable the setting that lets FontExplorerX open at log in.
Start up the application you are going to use.
Start up FontExplorerX right after.
If you need to add an application, stop FontExplorer, start that application and restart FEX again after. |

No but I wonder if developer are still in. I mean they could have fixed leopard issues, I've sent 2/3 mails without answers. So if devs visit this board, please tell us there is something going on.
I'm seriously thinking to move to Font Agent Pro, too much problems with FEX lately and no fixes. |

I would think FontExplorerX too valuable for Linotype to let it be unsupported. I just hope they show some sign of life soon.
As developers, they SHOULD have subscribed to the betas of Leopard 10.5.2 to discover incompatibilities in time and fix it. It is also in favour of Apple to keep their users from trouble and they provide help to solve developers problems.
I depend on Linotype to fix this really soon because FontExplorer is/was a great product. |

You're right this is a great piece of software. Font Agent pro is good too but FEX UI is far better (I'm an ex-FAP user) with more way to organize, characters preview etc...
Maybe this major issue will force Linotype to do something as there will be more people whining about this than for "activations states not properly saved". I hope so. |

Stranger and stranger...
I get all of the bad behavior described here on my G5 DP, PLUS FEX seems to be messing with some of the icons at the right hand side of the menubar (Time Machine, Spaces, Volume, Bluetooth... but not spotlight, thank goodness).
On my Intel PowerBook Pro, however, FEX seems to be behaving normally -- all the programs work, and the icons in the menubar are OK.
I add my vote for the developer to get themselves busy and update the app.

| I also would like to see some movement on development as we are all aware last august was the last time FE was updaated. Could it be that they are not developing FE anymore? Anyone from Linotype care to comment? |

| The update is out now. It works, and it fixes lots of other long-standing issues like the cache deleting problem. Linotype, you totally won me over yet again. Go FEX! |
